Aya Contigo turns Women's Day into real-world impact and you can be part of it

Gabriela Calderar

March is a great month for us in Vitala Global Foundation because on March 8 we commemorate International Women's Day and on March 10, we celebrate the third anniversary of the launch of Aya Contigo, our digital companion app.

Of course, this isn't just a day for inspiring quotes and social media posts. It's a call to “Accelerate Action” for every woman and girl, which is the slogan of International Women’s Day this year.

But the question is how do we move beyond slogans and into tangible change? That’s the job we are doing in Aya Contigo, a digital tool revolutionizing access to sexual and reproductive health information, and in doing so, making the spirit of International Women's Day a lived reality.

Our vision is a world where every woman has the power to make informed decisions about her own body. Since our launch in Venezuela in 2022, where access to safe and legal abortion is restricted, we have positioned ourselves as more than an app, but a digital advocate, a source of truth, and a catalyst for empowerment.

In 2023 we expanded to the United States in response to the Dobbs decision and to support the US Latina/x community disproportionately affected by the abortion bans.

To date , we have supported more than 20,000 users through their abortion and contraception journeys, and engaged with over a hundred organizations across the United States and Latin America.

Since 2022, we have had more than 10,000 conversations and we have secured partnerships with Planned Parenthood, Abortion Pills in Private, and other organizations to help increase this ecosystem of support for people trying to get abortions and comprehensive information about sexual and reproductive rights.

Act, give, fund!

The call for this year is to make International Women's Day one call to action to boost the impact for women-focused initiatives as recipients of fundraising and visibility support.

You can donate to Vitala Global here and help expand Aya Contigo, especially now that in the United States legal barriers to abortion are increasing and immigrant women are at high risk.

Our work is more important than ever. Guttmacher Institute stated that “in 2023, medication abortion use ranged from 95% in Wyoming and 84% in Montana to 44% in Washington, DC and 46% in Ohio. As threats to reproductive health and rights intensify, these new data drive home that regardless of geography, people across the country rely on abortion pills.”

But the reality is that people still need information about how to use those pills, what to expect during abortion, and one of the most important features of our app: getting emotional support through a process that can be a rollercoaster of emotions.

Also, there is rampant misinformation and fear about accessing abortions, so that is why Aya Contigo can offer anonymous non-judgemental navigational support for safe access and care.

In an increasingly digital world, leveraging technology to deliver essential services is crucial. Aya Contigo can overcome geographical barriers, providing access to information and support for women in remote or underserved areas. Our app also offers a level of privacy that may be crucial for women seeking sensitive information.

Let's break barriers. Help us spread the word!
