In 2022, Venezuela was still going through the economic and social crisis that produced the forced migration of more than 7.7 million people. Just out of the pandemic, 71% of Venezuelan women did not use contraceptives due to shortages in pharmacies, because they did not have the money to buy them or because of lack of sex education. In case of pregnancy, an anachronistic law of 1915, still in force, restricts the right to decide and penalizes those who help to perform abortions.
As a result, 10% of all maternal deaths in the country can be attributed to unsafe abortions. Although this figure may be significantly higher, due to the absence of official statistics and the clandestine nature of the procedures due to illegality.
In this context, the launch of Aya Contigo in Venezuela marked the beginning of a new approach to the problem of access to reliable information, through an application that also offers qualified and unbiased support.

Powered by Vitala Global, a Canadian organization dedicated to designing technology solutions for women to expand their options and make informed decisions about sexual and reproductive health, Aya Contigo is a tool to reach women in the most challenging contexts.
For the Right to Choose
Since its launch, Aya Contigo has reached more than 1,800 people in street and reflection activities and increased its partnerships by 166% compared to its first year. It has developed 870 accompaniment conversations through the app and expanded its radius of action to the United States, where laws criminalizing and limiting abortion went into effect in 24 states starting in 2022.
97% of respondents report a positive experience with the care team and would recommend Aya Contigo to others; 100% report that the team responded to them in a satisfactory manner; 58% report comfort during the abortion process and 83% indicated that they had the best pain management.
This reflects the success of this model of care and its potential to reach other countries where the right to decide is limited by law. On its second anniversary, Aya Contigo demonstrates the transformative power of a service designed by and for women, non-binary people and trans men that is at once a symbol of empowerment and equitable access to reproductive health, paving the way for a more just and healthy future.
